I Paid $25,000 for This RARE Babe Ruth Card at The National! | Trading Card Therapy Ep. 126
Leighton kicks things ...off with his favorite pickup from The National: an incredibly rare Babe Ruth card from the 1917–1920 Felix Mendelssohn set.
With only a small number of examples known, this particular Ruth is historically significant because it represents one of the earliest cards to designate Babe Ruth as a member of the NEW YORK YANKEES — while still picturing him in his Boston uniform.
The asking price? $25,000.
Leighton had a chance to make a deal on Tuesday... waited overnight... and learned firsthand why sometimes you can't get yesterday's price today.
But the Ruth was still there Wednesday morning — and this time he wasn't walking away without it.
Also in Episode 126:
⚾ Buying the #11-ranked 1975 Topps Mini PSA Registry Set
🏀 Why Michael Jordan was clearly the hobby king at The National
🔥 The incredible demand for vintage cards across the show
🏆 Meeting longtime collector Fred McKee and hearing how he bought a T206 Honus Wagner for just $1,100 in 1973
⚾ Helping bring an E90-1 Shoeless Joe Jackson back home to Greenville, South Carolina
❤️ The incredible story of a young collector named Henry who saved three 1948 Leaf Hall of Famers from being THROWN IN THE TRASH
⛳ A night with Hall of Famer Rollie Fingers — including an unbelievable story about Michael Jordan, a game of gin, and two signed Joker playing cards that eventually sold for $10,000
Plus, Leighton shares his thoughts on why The National remains the Super Bowl of card shows and what collectors should know before attending next year's event.
💬 QUESTION FOR COLLECTORS:
What was YOUR favorite pickup from The National?
And who is currently #2 in the hobby behind Michael Jordan — Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Shohei Ohtani, or someone else?
